The decision was made by the Bearcat LLC, the limited liability company charged with the operation of The Hills Golf Club, and the McKendree University Board of Trustees.
When the course was purchased in April of 2012, it was a good decision which allowed the University to acquire a significant piece of land which borders the campus, and because it was good for the City of Lebanon and the residents who own homes on the golf course to continue to have a property that was well maintained and utilized for the purpose it was originally intended.
Over the course of the last four years’ improvements have been made to the course, the Club House and the overall operation of the Golf Club, including the addition of a number of golf leagues, a strong tournament schedule, and a nice dining option. Despite these improvements, the course has consistently operated at a loss, which has caused the decision to close.
The University will continue to maintain the property and has no immediate plans for the use of the land at this time. There are no plans to place the course on the market, however the Bearcat LLC would be open to the purchase of the golf course should a viable offer be tendered. The Refuge Family Grill will have the opportunity to continue operations in the Clubhouse.
The Decisions was not made lightly, and we share the disappointment of the community and everyone who worked so hard to make it a successful venture. Please accept our thanks for all you did as friends and patrons to assist us in our best attempts to operate The Hills as profitable business venture.
